Turning writing into motion

Having to change my writing into a completely new form was both a fun experience and a demanding challenge. I found that there were many struggles to turn my writing into a video. Not only did I have to keep the audiences interested in the contents of the video, I still had to make sure that the resources in the video itself was appropriate and effectively conveyed my opinions on the matter. Many things had to be changed to gain a more successful approach towards the topic.
I started out knowing that a video would be my prime method as a non-essay medium. Videos carry images, sounds, messages, etc. that can appeal to large groups of people. As my target audience was anyone who had knowledge or was still new to the picture of the porn industry. My goal through the video was not to persuade people to change their opinions on the adult video industry. What I wanted people to know from the video was the fact that there were good sides to the porn industry, and these benefits should not be overpowered by the apparent negativity. What is more, the viewers need to feel entertained. They need to find these facts helpful and captivating to actually pay attention to the video. In order to achieve this goal, changes were needed.
For the video, I focused more on incorporating images and ideas that support my main point. Unlike the writing, the video should not be condensed with numbers and facts as they can bore the audience. This is why I opted for using more images and interviews to keep the viewers interested. The pictures I used in the videos were mostly screenshots of porn websites. This way I could cut out inappopriate scenes that might disturb the audience and also give them a more realistic image of the positivity of porn. I also added a short interview of a porn director talking about her aims in the career. This gives the audience a sense of authenticity, as they are actually listening to a person in the industry speak about her belief. Thus, giving them a clearer view on the matter and making the argument more persuasive.
The whole process of finding pictures and resource turned out to be more of a challenge than what I had initially anticipated. Due to the sensitivity of my topic, it was tough to come through the appropriate materials that can actually be put into a video being watched by a large group of audience. If not chosen carefully, the images can disturb the viewers, leaving them with a bad impression. Thus, the pictures shown in the video were relatively simple, but they were still strong enough for the audience to understand the message. For example, when introducing my point of porn being a form of art, I used a simple picture with the word “porn” that was designed to look more colorful and artsy. This image was subtle, but it kept the audience interested as it strongly conveyed the message.
Another challenge for me was to balance out the amount of information with the numbers of illustrations. Too much information and the video can become boring, too little information and it might be hard to convey the main points. This is why I opted for having a voiceover throughout the video. The voiceover was done in a somewhat quirky tone and a story-telling style, which gave the video a more relaxing and fun vibe. Therefore, the audience can find themselves in a more comfortable place to understand and agree with my opinion. What is more, the voiceover guides the viewers through the video’s intended points, so it reassures the main points are correctly conveyed.
With the images, voiceovers and ideas being merged together, I came closer to achieving my goal for the project. The images and information given conveys my significant points on the matter. The voiceover helps to further enhance these points and also adds a humorous touch that entertains the viewers. All in all, these elements cooperate with one another and ultimately bring out the important aspects of a video: informational and entertaining.
Reflection
Inquiry 4 was a fun but demanding assignment indeed, as I found many challenges appearing during the whole process. Most of the time, I found myself thinking how I should be designing the video to clearly convey my ideas, but still keep the viewers entertained at the same time. What is more, it proves to be a complicated task to keep the flow of the video running smoothly and consistently. Unlike a writing assignment where I can add filler words, sentences that connect two different ideas, I have to think more carefully about the filler scenes I use in the video, as it stands a high chance or distracting the audiences from the main point. More importantly, it takes time to find the appropriate illustrations for my work, which is why things get that much harder. However, in the end things worked out, even though I don’t think this best represents my ability, it sill shows what I have to offer and that I can grow more in the future.
